Before there were phone apps about pummelling a rubber dummy, there was Interactive Buddy: a 2005 Flash toy from Shock Value that puts a small grey figure on a plain stage and gives you a toolbar to do whatever you like to him. There is no story, no timer and no fail state. It is a sandbox, and the fun is in finding out what each button does.

The browser version here runs through the Ruffle Flash emulator, so it plays on this page with nothing to install. If you came to this site for Kick The Teddy Bear, this is where that style of play began, and it feels noticeably different: slower, stranger and more experimental than a modern tap-to-smash game.

How to play

It is almost entirely mouse-driven. Click and drag to grab the buddy and fling him around the stage, then pick items, weapons and explosives from the toolbar and use them on him. Using things on the buddy earns you money, and the money buys more items, so the toolbox gradually grows from simple gadgets to the bigger, louder ones.

A session usually goes like this: try everything you can afford, notice which items combine well, save up for the next unlock, and repeat. Nothing here is a puzzle, so there is no wrong order.

Tips

• Test every button at least once. Some of the best reactions come from items you would never pick on purpose.
• Throwing the buddy into the edges of the stage, or hitting him again while he is still moving, gives you more to work with than one hit at a time.
• Do not spend everything on the first thing you can afford. Saving for a bigger item usually makes the next few minutes more interesting.
• Because it is an emulated Flash game, give it a moment to load, and click inside the game area before expecting it to respond.
