What is Checkers?

Checkers is a traditional strategy board game played on an eight-by-eight grid. In this digital edition, you command a set of dark or light circular pieces across dark squares, aiming to capture every opposing checker or block your rival from making valid moves. The game runs directly in any modern desktop or mobile browser with no download required.

Key features

  • Turn-based tactics: Plan diagonal moves ahead to outmaneuver opponent pieces and seize control of the board center.
  • Diagonal piece movement: Slide standard pieces forward along dark squares toward the opposing back row.
  • Jump captures: Leap over adjacent rival pieces into an open square directly behind them to remove them from play.
  • King piece promotion: Guide checkers to the opponent back rank to crown them with bidirectional movement abilities.
  • Multiple capture chains: String consecutive jumps together in a single turn whenever valid capture squares open up.
  • Instant browser playback: Enjoy quick board matches on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

How to play

  1. Observe the starting board layout and note the positions of your pieces along the dark squares.
  2. Click or tap the piece you want to move to reveal its valid diagonal paths.
  3. Advance ordinary pieces forward by one diagonal square into an unoccupied space.
  4. Jump over an adjacent opposing checker diagonally into an empty space behind it to capture it.
  5. Continue jumping in the same turn if another capture immediately becomes possible from your landing spot.
  6. Reach the furthest row on the opposing side of the board to promote your checker into a king.
  7. Finish the match by eliminating all opposing pieces or trapping your opponent with no legal moves left.

Capturing mechanics and king promotion

Movement in Checkers takes place strictly on dark diagonal squares. Regular pieces can only move forward into adjacent unoccupied spaces. When an opposing checker rests on an adjacent diagonal square and the space directly behind it is empty, you can leap over that piece and remove it from the board. If the landing square sets up another valid leap over an adjacent enemy checker, you can continue chaining jumps within the same turn.

Advancing a checker all the way to the opposing baseline crowns the piece as a king. Unlike regular checkers that can only push forward, king pieces can move and capture both forward and backward diagonally. Establishing king pieces early provides superior mobility across open lanes, allowing you to intercept runaway opponent pieces and dominate end-game positions.

Tips and strategy

  • Control the central squares: Occupying the middle section of the board provides more movement options and prevents your pieces from becoming trapped against side borders.
  • Protect your back row: Keeping your starting baseline checkers in place prevents your opponent from easily reaching your side to crown kings.
  • Set up tactical sacrifices: Deliberately offering a piece as bait can lure an opposing checker into a vulnerable spot for a double jump return.
  • Advance in structured pairs: Moving checkers in tandem ensures that trailing pieces protect the landing squares of lead checkers.
  • Avoid isolated checkers: Single pieces left stranded without rear support are easily targeted and captured by opposing forces.

Versions and similar games

Checkers is a traditional board game in the draughts family. Unlike companion titles on this site such as Interactive Buddy, Smash Room, and Kick The Teddy Bear that focus on physics sandbox experimentation and ragdoll destruction, Checkers delivers a thoughtful turn-based tactical challenge centered on spatial foresight and positional advantage.

Questions about Checkers

Is Checkers unblocked at school?

How do you win a match in Checkers?

You win by capturing all opposing pieces on the board or by blocking your opponent so they cannot make any legal moves.

What special ability do king pieces have in Checkers?

Once a piece reaches the farthest row on the opponent side, it becomes a king and can move or jump both forward and backward along diagonals.

Can you play Checkers on mobile devices without an app?

Yes, Checkers runs directly inside modern web browsers on mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers with touch or mouse controls.

Is multiple jumping allowed in one turn?

Yes, if a piece lands on a square where another jump over an opponent piece is immediately possible, the piece continues jumping in the same turn.
