Jetpack Joyride is a one-button endless runner from Halfbrick, the studio behind Fruit Ninja. Barry Steakfries breaks into a secret laboratory, grabs a machine-gun jetpack and starts flying down a long corridor. There is no finish line. You go as far as your reflexes allow, and the run ends when something in the lab hits Barry.
A run is short, usually a minute or two, and that is what makes it easy to pick up. Fans of the ragdoll and smash games on this site will recognise the same "one more try" pull, but here the fun comes from steering through hazards instead of wrecking a room.
How to play
Hold the mouse button or Space and the jetpack fires, lifting Barry. Let go and he drops. That is the whole control scheme. The skill is in tapping and holding in small pulses so Barry hovers at the height you want instead of bouncing off the ceiling and floor.
Coins trace out patterns in the air, and following them keeps you moving through the safe line. The dangers come in a few kinds:
- Zappers are electric bars that sit still, spin or slide up and down. Touching one ends the run.
- Lasers flash a warning line first, then fire across the screen. Move out of the beam before it goes live.
- Missiles show a warning marker at the edge of the screen before they arrive, so you have a moment to line up a dodge.
Along the way you can pick up vehicle capsules that give Barry a machine to ride, which usually absorbs one hit. The longer you survive, the faster the screen scrolls and the more crowded the obstacles get. Your score is the distance covered.
Tips
- Use short taps rather than long holds. Holding only to climb makes you rise too quickly and clip the ceiling.
- Look ahead. Read the next zapper while you are still passing the last one, so your height is already right when it arrives.
- Stay near the middle of the screen when it is quiet. From there you can reach either the top or bottom edge in time.
- Treat coins as optional. Dying for one coin is the most common way to throw away a good run.
